Unfortunately, the last couple of weeks of the year brings more drunk drivers to the roadways than any other time of the year. In 2010, six lives were lost due to alcohol related accidents between Thanksgiving weekend and New Year’s eve. This year the number of fatalities from Thanksgiving to earlier this week had reached 13, and the New Year celebrations have yet to begin.

What can you do to protect your loved ones from being the victim of a drunk driver this holiday weekend? First and foremost, if you don’t have to be on the roads, simply avoid being on the roads. The likelihood of passing a drunk driver on Denver’s roadways during New Year’s celebrations are fairly high, so if you can avoid sharing the roads with these drivers, please do. Celebrating New Year’s at  home is the safest way to celebrate.

If you must be on the roads, allow several car lengths of space between you and other drivers, keep yourself aware of not only those in front of you, but also those behind or to the side of your vehicle. Give police officers and other emergency personnel plenty of room to pass, and pull over to left if you see a stopped vehicle.

If you are the victim of an accident that involved a impaired driver, contact an experienced Colorado personal injury attorney right away. The attorneys at the Overton Law Firm can help establish liability, negotiate with insurance companies and ensure you get full and fair compensation for your injuries.
